the spiral of life

the climb starts easy, im full of energy, dashing up the rope. im so desperate to reach the top. soon, my muscles start aching, i shouldn’t have used up all my energy. how foolish. i move much slower, fatigue enveloping me like a wet, winter coat. yet, i never stop moving. my energy slowly returns, but never back to how it used to be.
my hands start to harden with callouses, bearing the ropes burdens. as i climb higher and higher, the rope starts to fray, now a mere string is holding me. but i never stop climbing. my muscles ache again, perhaps i wore myself out? they never stopped aching after that day.
the pain becomes natural to me, just another weight on my shoulders. as i continue ascending, my vision blurs. perhaps its just laziness? it only worsens after that.
still climbing, my body nastily numb, i pass the tasteless clouds, not like i could see them much anyway.
suddenly, i stop. feeling almost, at peace. but then i continue my fruitless journey again. i keep stopping and starting. like an old, wrecked car engine. but never long enough to catch my breath. i long for one single breath.
finally, i see the hook that my feeble rope is clinging to. im at the summit, i have finally done it. ive reached the top. now i can sleep peacefully and forget about my one breath.
then the rope finally snaps and i plummet down.
finally, ive reached eternal peace.
forever.
