Privacy notice
The short version: we collect almost nothing. We don't use cookies on the public site, so there's no cookie banner. The only personal data we hold is what you give us when you submit work — your email, your age band, a parent's email if you're under 16, and the work itself — and it's held securely by one person. You can ask for it back, or ask us to delete it, any time.
Who's responsible
The data controller — the person legally accountable for what we do with your data — is Ann Isbister, who runs Perotine. Contact her about anything to do with your data at dpo@perotine.com.
Where this applies
Perotine is run from the UK and the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The UK GDPR (with the Data Protection Act 2018) and the Data Protection (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law 2017 both apply, and we aim to meet both.
Where your data is stored
Contributor data is held in Sanity, our content management system, on infrastructure in the United States. UK and Guernsey data-protection law allow transfers like this when they're made under approved safeguards. We rely on the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses — the UK-recognised contractual safeguard for transfers outside the UK/EEA after the Schrems II ruling — together with Sanity's own technical and organisational security measures. The personal data involved is limited (your email, age band, a parent's email if you're under 16, and the work you submit), and we've assessed the transfer as appropriate to that. The public website itself never contains your personal data — emails, parent emails and editor notes are stripped out before a page is built.
We also use Anthropic, a company based in the United States, to run an automated first-pass spelling and grammar check over each piece before a person reviews it. A human editor still reads and decides on everything, and nothing is published automatically. Only the title and the words of the piece are sent to Anthropic — never your name, your email, your age, or a parent's email. This transfer to the United States relies on the same kind of safeguard as our use of Sanity (the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, under Anthropic's data-processing terms), and we've assessed it as appropriate to the limited content involved. Anthropic does not use the submissions we send it to train its models.
Your rights
You can ask us to show you the data we hold about you, correct it, or delete it (the right to be forgotten). Email dpo@perotine.com. We don't charge for this. If you're not happy, tell us first; if you're still not satisfied you can complain to the ICO (ico.org.uk) in the UK or the Office of the Data Protection Authority (odpa.gg) in Guernsey.
